Northern Vietnam Destinations by Bus from Hanoi

Halong Bay

Halong Bay in Quang Ninh province is a world natural heritage with thousands of majestic limestone islands, mysterious caves, and blue water. It's the most popular tourist destination in Northern Vietnam and thousands of tourists travel there from Hanoi every day.

As the destination attracts mainly tourists, most buses from Hanoi to Halong Bay depart from the city center, where the majority of tourists choose to stay. In most cases, pickup at a hotel in Hanoi Old Quarter is included, so you don't need to travel to the bus station by yourself. To transfer from Hanoi to Halong Bay, you can choose from different vehicles, with limousine vans being the most popular option. The trip normally takes about 2.5 hours.

 

While you can travel to Halong Bay independently and arrange your cruise at the place by yourself, getting a day trip from Hanoi, which includes return transportation by bus and cruise, is a more convenient option.

Sapa

Sapa in Lao Cai province is a famous tourist destination with many natural and cultural attractions such as the highest in Vietnam Fansipan Mountain, terraced rice fields, villages of ethnic minorities, waterfalls, and much more.

Haiphong

Most buses from Hanoi to Haiphong depart from Gia Lam Bus Station. There are also several daily bus departures from Nuoc Ngam Bus Station and Yen Nghia Bus Station. The trip normally takes about 2-2.5 hours by express bus and a bit more by a simple bus.

Cat Ba Island

Cat Ba Island is a part of Cat Ba archipelago with many pristine islands, beautiful landscapes, and diverse ecosystems. It is also a starting point of some cruises to Lan Ha Bay, which is a beautiful bay with many mysterious caves, clear blue water, and small islands, similar to Halong Bay.

As Cat Ba is an island not connected with the mainland by a bridge, you need to take a ferry or a cable car to the island. In case you want to travel there from Hanoi independently, take a bus to Haiphong first (see above).

Ha Giang

Ha Giang, the northernmost province in Vietnam, is home to some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the country.
